MEARC is part of the Leiden Institute for Area Studies (LIAS) at Leiden University's Faculty of Humanities. LIAS has as its aim the advancement of Area Studies at Leiden University and in the wider academic community, with emphatic attention to the relevance of education and research for society at large.
MEARC's research activities are initiated and executed by our directors and research community members who are mostly LIAS faculty. Our research community feels committed to MEARC's focus on multidisciplinarity, comparability and clear regional and temporal boundaries.

MEARC's organisational core is formed by its two directors, Professor Chris Goto-Jones and Professor Peter Ho. Both directors are drawn from Leiden University's academic staff and have regional & disciplinary expertise in line with MEARC's objectives. The directors are responsible for designing MEARC's academic strategy along the lines of the mission statement.
The directors are supported by the manager, Esther Truijen. The manager is responsible for the daily business of the centre, its finances and for executing the strategy designed by the directors.
The two directors and the manager together form the MEARC directorate.
The directorate is assisted by Roxane van Beek.

A small group of committed, experienced and knowledgable researchers from within LIAS, other Leiden University institutes, or elsewhere, advise the MEARC directorate on its strategy and are actively engaged in creating MEARC products resulting from the strategy.
The directorate selects and invites steering committee members. Members will be selected based on their standing in relevant fields and their commitment to participation in the mission of MEARC. Committee membership is evaluated on a yearly basis.

Researchers from LIAS and beyond (national and international) who wish to associate their research or certain research projects with MEARC’s mission and research objectives can become research affiliates of MEARC. Research affiliates are either invited by the MEARC directorate or researchers themselves can ask the directorate to be invited. In both cases, researchers should be able to demonstrate that their research project(s) are in line with MEARC’s research interests and mission.
PhD’s in the various projects hosted by MEARC as well as visiting researchers who wish to cooperate with MEARC specifically are considered part of our research community. In many cases, these research community members will be LIAS staff and visitors.

MEARC relies on the support and advice of its patron members, especially when reaching out to two of its audiences: business and policy makers. Our patron members are outstanding members of business and (non-)governmental organisations and all have professional experience in one or more of MEARC’s regions of interest.
The MEARC Foundation is established in 2008 to help MEARC venture out into non-academic surroundings. One of our foundation board members is MEARC's initial supporter: former Leiden University's President and Rector Magnificus, Professor Douwe Breimer. Other members include the chair of the foundation, André baron van Heemstra (former board member Unilever) and Ralph Kröner (Of Counsil at Eversheds Faasen).
